Are angels real or a product of overactive imaginations that seek proof of the divine?

According to a Pew Survey in 2007 , nearly seven-in-ten Americans (68%) believe in angels. They believe that angels and demons are active in the world. Majorities of Jehovah’s Witnesses (78%), members of evangelical (61%) and historically black (59%) Protestant churches, and Mormons (59%) are completely convinced of the existence of angels and demons. In stark contrast, majorities of Jews (73%), Buddhists (56%), Hindus (55%) and the unaffiliated (54%) do not believe that angels and demons are active in the world.

In a more recent survey of 1,648 adults conducted by Baylor University with the Gallup polling group in 2008 half of all Americans believe they are protected by guardian angels, one-fifth say they've heard God speak to them, one-quarter say they have witnessed miraculous healings and 16 percent say they've received one Asked 350 questions on their religious practices  it seems a significant majority were comfortable with the notion of angels as being a real phenomena. 

By comparison a Pew poll released in 2009  found that just 36 percent of Americans believe humans are responsible for accelerating global climate change!

Western religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – teach that angels are a separate creation,  although apparently they can take on the guise of humans when and if God needs them to do so. In these traditions angels act as messengers and guardians to humans with the word "angel" actually meaning "messenger" in Hebrew and Greek. 

Some believe that each person is given his/her own angel at the time of creation, and that angel stays with his charge until death. The Greek word for angel is angelos, meaning messenger; the Hebrew word is malakh, meaning divine spirit, and the Persian word is angeros, which translates as courier. 

Emma Heathcote, a 22-year-old graduate of theology from Birmingham University, UK, is researching angel encounters and according to her work angel experiences seem to fall into five main categories. 

The first is visual, where the angel appears in either traditional winged-angel or human form, or often as a figure in white.

The second experience is an unexplained strong, sweet scent, which is very common at the time of a death. 

A third category is hearing a voice or a choir of angels, often inside a place of worship.

A fourth category is an actual physical feeling, which often happens to elderly people. The feeling of wings being enveloped around them is a common occurrence.

The fifth category is light: either a beam or a ray of light. Often at the time of a loved-one’s death, a ray of light seems to shoot upwards.

Personally I have found no reason not to believe in angels and can live happily believing them to be a real phenomena but one little understood by we mere mortals!
